Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrive in Fort McMurray

Hello, Bonjour, Hau! Welcome to Aurora Borealis Indigenous Village, where we gather under the world's largest dark sky reserves on Treaty 8 Territory. Join us at our village to learn about our Indigenous heritage while watching the Northern Lights dance above. The experience will begin at Fort McMurray International Airport or a selected hotel, where you will meet your transportation to the village. For same day departures, please schedule your flights to arrive in Fort McMurray prior to 1:30pm, otherwise you will need to join a trip the following day. Your guide will make a quick stop at Walmart and the liquor store to pick up any last minute essentials you man need for your trip. We will then travel two hours north of Fort McMurray, however in winter months you may wish to enjoy a dog sled tour in the wilderness outside the city on the way! The final part of our journey will be on snowmobile or ATV, depending on the season, to reach the village site. On arrival in the village, you will be shown to your heated, winterized and wi-fi equipped tent and given a tour of the camp facilities (please note that in winter there is no shower. Sponge-bath facilities will be provided). You will then gather around around the fire pit with your guide to smudge and bring good energy for your time at the village. Your day will finish with an indigenous dinner, before spending the rest of your night gazing at the incredible Aurora Borealis dancing above.

Day 2 - Welcome to the village

Good morning! Enjoy a relaxing morning in the serenity of Birch Mountain Provincial Park. As the Aurora can be viewed well into the small hours of the morning, there is no set start time for the day. Come to the culinary tent at your own leisure for a freshly prepared breakfast to fuel up for the day's activities. Included activities will vary depending on the season, and you may enjoy snowmobiling and snowshoeing, or embark on an optional ice fishing trip. In summer, berry picking, hiking, fishing and ATV trips will be on offer. There are also year round Indigenous activities available, such as smudging, storytelling, cooking and teaching circles. Your day will conclude with a meal prepared by our chefs, before settling in to listen to teaching and stories from your guide and enjoying the spectacular northern lights in the sky above.

Day 3 - Culture and wilderness

Welcome to your second full day at the village. Today will be set up in the same way as your previous day, with your guide coordinating the day's activities.

Day 4 - Departure from the village

Today will be your final day at the village. In the early afternoon, you will depart the village by snowmobile or ATV before boarding transport back to Fort McMurray International Airport. On your way back to the airport, you will have another opportunity for a dog sled tour in the forests outside the city. Your estimated arrival in Fort McMurray will be around 5pm, so it is recommended to book onward flights or accommodation accordingly. We hope you have enjoyed this truly special experience!
